August Recess Updates

Congress is on their annual August Recess, which means there are ample opportunities to advocate from our local communities! Please see below various calls to action from our national partners, and let us know if you are planning to put together a visit with your member of Congress, or need help doing so by emailing fan@fanwa.org:

Our national ELCA Advocacy partners have put together a Recess Resource Guide that our whole community can use. Their blog post on the August Recess highlights issues of Hunger, Housing and Homelessness, Infrastructure and Climate Change, COVID-19 Vaccine Access, Asylum and Immigration Policy, and Tribal/US Government Relations with talking points and questions you can ask your Congressmembers. They recommend using govtrack.us to find your Congressmembers and follow the stances they take on various issues.

As the Senate Considers a $3.5 Trillion Budget Resolution, Interfaith, Jewish, and Catholic Faith Groups call on the Senate to pass a moral budget: National faith groups are calling on Congress to pass a moral budget reconciliation package that adequately addresses the crises faced by our communities – not only the COVID-19 health crisis, but poverty, systemic racism, and devastating climate change as well as permanently extending the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. Read their full press release here.

Americans for Tax Fairness and other progressive tax organizations are also pushing for a just budget reconciliation process that prioritizes an economy and tax code that rewards work, not wealth. They are calling Congress to spend at least $4 trillion, paid for by fairer taxes on the wealthy and corporations. Use their budget reconciliation toolkit to urge your Congressmembers by phone, email, petitions, and social media to invest in jobs, healthcare, eldercare, childcare, clean energy, the Child Tax Credit, and more!

The Interfaith Immigration Coalition and the Welcome With Dignity campaign are hosting Days of Action from July 17-31 to create awareness and end Title 42 and expand asylum protections. The Biden Administration is expected to make a series of announcements on a Trump-era anti-asylum policy known as Title 42 which has been used to block asylum since March 2020, sending families back to dangerous situations and blocking their legal and moral right to seek asylum. #Faiths4Asylum has a Prayer Vigil Toolkit, an action letter to send to your Congressmembers, and a Welcome with Dignity Pledge you can sign.

Police Tactics and Use of Force Legislation to Take Effect July 25

Co-Director Paul represents FAN on the WA Coalition for Police Accountability (WCPA), and together the coalition was able to push for some important police reform bills that passed in the 2021 legislative session. Two of these bills are taking effect on July 25 – HB 1310 Use of Force and HB 1054 Police Tactics. These bills require de-escalation tactics to be used by police officers and the use of less lethal alternatives if possible before resorting to deadly force. For more information, read the WCPA’s full statement on these two bills and their response to misconceptions some law enforcement agencies have expressed about them.

Tell Gov. Inslee – Clean Cars by 2030

FAN, along with many other organizations, is partnering with Earth Ministry to call Governor Inslee to sign an executive order for Clean Cars by 2030. In the last legislative session, HB 1287 to do just this was passed by the legislature only to be partially vetoed when it got to the governor’s desk. We are calling for Governor Inslee to honor the desire of the legislature and the people by issuing an executive order setting forth this electrification target, which will be necessary to meet the Paris Climate Accord and President Biden’s goal of cutting carbon emissions by 2030. Over 180 people of faith have signed so far – help us get to 300! Please join us in signing the petition for Clean Cars by 2030 to show your support!

Events & Opportunities

Research Opportunity: Desautel Hege, who FAN has worked with on vaccine outreach, is conducting a WA State COVID-19 Vaccine Disability Survey to better understand the experiences of people with disabilities, especially those in BIPOC communities, around finding and getting the COVID-19 vaccine. The survey is open through the end of July and is available in Somali, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, and English. Please share and participate if you would like.
