Turning to One Another – Elizabeth Dickinson Sermon

2023-02-03T15:20:16-08:00

Elizabeth Dickinson offered the sermon excerpted here at Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Seattle, March 13, 2022. I’m so delighted to be with you today to formally welcome you into the community of critical connections we call the Faith Action Network. We need your energy and courage, and I hope you need ours. The Faith Action Network, or FAN as we informally call it, is a web of communities from different religious traditions around the state. Westside UU Congregation is now one of 163 communities in this “network of mutuality,” to use Martin Luther King, Jr’s words. As Unitarians, you may [...]

Legislative Session Week Seven

2023-02-03T15:17:28-08:00

FAN joins hearts and voices across the world in praying, vigiling, protesting, and calling for peace and an end to war. We continue to work for justice with these intentions. Week 7 of Legislative Session On Monday, House and Senate Democrats released their separate supplemental state budget proposals. Supplemental budgets are passed in even-numbered years and allow the state to make mid-course corrections to the two-year budgets passed in odd-numbered years. Budget leaders released their plans just hours before public hearings on the proposals: Senate PSSB 5693 and House PSHB 1816. Each chamber looks to pass their plan off their [...]

Legislative Session Week Six

2023-02-03T15:16:53-08:00

We are past the halfway point of this short 60-day session that ends on March 10. Lawmakers spent long days and nights to meet the Tuesday, February 15, deadline for bills to be voted out of their house of origin. Upcoming important deadlines are February 24 for Opposite House Policy Cutoff and February 28 for Opposite House Fiscal Cutoff. The House spent over nine hours on HB 1837 (regarding the state's ability to address work-related musculoskeletal injuries), from the eve of February 14 to about 6:20am the next day. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, HB 2048 Temporary Assistance for Needy [...]

Legislative Session Week Five

2023-02-03T15:16:00-08:00

We are past the halfway point in this short, intense 60-day session. It was remarkably busy on the floor this week due to legislative cutoff. Legislative cutoffs are milestones that bills need to reach by certain dates to receive further consideration. Any bills that don’t make it to these milestones will need to wait until the next legislative session to continue the process or be reintroduced at the start of a new biennium. Because this is a short session, the first set of cutoff dates are already here. Bills that were not approved by House or Senate policy committees by [...]

IFAD Opening by Rabbi Avi Fine

2022-02-11T17:57:57-08:00

Text of the IFAD opening by Rabbi Avi Fine, Assistant Rabbi, Temple De Hirsch Sinai February 10, 2022 "Good morning all and thank you for a being a part of FAN’s Interfaith Advocacy Day. Allow me to open with one of my favorite Jewish texts related to using your voice civically. This text comes from the Talmud, which is a collection of Jewish law, codified around the 6th-8th centuries CE. The authors, who we refer to as “the rabbis,” are writing as leaders of a Jewish community with very little power relative to the outside forces in the countries in [...]
