FAN’s advocating faith communities across Washington State come together during our annual Spring Summits to talk about how our legislative agenda fared during the past session and plan for the rest of the year. We  begin to craft the following year’s legislative agenda, so if your faith community has issues you want us to consider, this is your opportunity to get them on the radar.

This year, there will once agian conversation about FAN’s new effort to establish work groups around specific issues: economic justice, criminal justice, the environment, and health care, to name a few possibilities. Together, we look for new ways to be more effective at creating lasting change.

Our 2016 summits were:

Seattle, May 15, 2016
FAN’s Spring Summits kicked off in Seattle at Seattle First Baptist Church. Over 70 advocates from the area gathered, celebrated Justice Leadership Award winner Jerry Large, heard about the past legislative session, started setting priorities for the future, and celebrated FAN’s fifth birthday!

Instead of gathering by legislative districts, this year we gathered according to discussion group topics, including: Economic Justice, Health Care, Environmental Justice, Criminal Justice, Affordable Housing/Homelessness, and Protecting the Safety Net. In those groups, FAN advocates discussed the issues and chose their top three priority concerns for work in the future. Those priorities will be important as FAN continues to organize issue working groups to advance policy solutions to issues that our advocates are most passionate about. The priorities of this summit and the other three summits will also go to FAN’s Program Committee meeting in June to begin the process of prioritization for the 2017 Legislative Agenda.

If you’re interested in joining the current working groups for Economic Justice, Heath Care, Environmental Justice, or Criminal Justice working groups, email us at fan@fanwa.org.

Spokane on May 22, Vancouver on June 5, and Yakima on June 12
After the Seattle Summit in mid-May, advocates also gathered in Vancouver, Spokane, and Yakima. This year, instead of gathering by legislative districts, we gathered according to discussion group topics, including: Economic Justice, Health Care, Environmental Justice, Criminal Justice, Affordable Housing/Homelessness, and Protecting the Safety Net. In those groups, FAN advocates discussed the issues and chose their top three priorities for work in the future.

Since gathering that information from our advocates, the FAN Program Committee met to review the results and the Governing Board will review and make recommendations toward a Legislative Agenda for 2017. FAN’s newly organized issue working groups will also advance policy solutions to issues that our advocates are most passionate about. If you’re interested in joining the current working groups for Economic Justice, Health Care, Environmental Justice, or Criminal Justice, email us at fan@fanwa.org.
