Hear Me! Stand with Me!

Antisemitism and Islamophobia: Jewish and Muslim Neighbors Standing with Each Other

Sunday July 18, 2021
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Islamophobia and Antisemitism arise from the same root of fear. When one grows the other grows. Both communities suffer and our society is made less safe and our mutual thriving is put at risk. One of the common ways to feed this root of fear is to dehumanize both communities by assuming they cannot or will not work together. In this Hear Me! Stand with Me! you will hear Jews and Muslims share their personal stories and perspectives of antisemitism and islamophobia, and how it impacts their respective faith communities; you will be inspired by how Jewish and Muslim neighbors have built trusting relationships and creative partnerships to counter antisemitism and islamophobia here in Seattle; and you will reflect what brought you together for this gathering and how it may influence your stand with those impacted by bias and discrimination in the future.

Program Notes:

Islamophobia and Antisemitism: Max Tachnich, Miri Cypers, Shukri Olow and Rais Bhuiyan will discuss the challenges of Antisemitism and Islamophobia and what we can do about them.

Jewish and Muslim Partnerships in the Seattle Area: Pastor Terry Kyllo will moderate a discussion between Sanaa Joy Carey of the Muslim Association of Puget Sound and Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum the Rabbi Emeritus of Herzl-Ner Tamid on Mercer Island to discuss their partnership and Samia El-Moslimany of Third Street Village and Sandra Silverstein of Kadima in Seattle. They will discuss their ongoing partnerships, how they met, and why faithfulness to their traditions calls them together.

Break Out Discussions: You will be invited to participate in break out rooms to engage one another with deep listening and mutual respect.

This program is a partnership between Northwest Interfaith, the Interfaith Community Sanctuary, St. Patricks Catholic Church, and Paths to Understanding.
