Make Your Voice Count in Congress

Action Alert: November 14, 2017

The Tax Cut & Jobs Act (HR 1) was passed out of House Ways and Means Committee last Thursday by a party-line vote. Both Congressman Dave Reichert (8th District) and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (1st District) are members of that committee. House leadership plans a floor vote by this Thursday. In the Senate, the Finance Committee, also revealed the Senate Republican tax plan, and leadership is looking at a vote after their Thanksgiving recess.

This plan is bad for Washington for three key reasons:

  • This tax reform plan is fiscally irresponsible and will surge the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years. It will threaten the future funding of critical federal programs, such as Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP (food stamps), housing assistance, job training, environmental protection, and more. These programs serve vulnerable people and households that are just making ends meet.
  • This tax plan disproportionately benefits high-income households and corporations while leaving behind low- and moderate-income families. It cuts corporate tax rates where those benefits will go mostly to CEO’s and shareholders (most of whom are millionaires); it will not benefit workers.
  • This tax plan makes harmful changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the American Opportunity Tax Credit, preventing low-income individuals and families from claiming these credits, which have a proven track record of reducing poverty and promoting economic mobility.
