Faith Action Network (FAN) announces Jackie O’Ryan is joining the leadership team to help lead Washington State’s premier faith advocacy organization into a new phase.

Faith Action Network (FAN) announces Jackie O’Ryan is joining the leadership team to help lead Washington State’s premier faith advocacy organization into a new phase. Last year, the Washington Association of Churches (WAC) and the Lutheran Public Policy Office (LPPO) united to form FAN after decades of success. FAN continues the mission of groundbreaking interfaith work building a powerful statewide force for change.

“I am excited about FAN’s mission to mobilize interfaith communities statewide,” said O’Ryan. “We’ll draw on theological, cultural, and ethnic roots in each faith tradition to unite all in compassion and inclusiveness, building a movement of the faithful in Washington State.”

O’Ryan has served as communications director in such organizations as OneAmerica, Catholic Community Services of Western Washington, UFCW Local 21, Lakeside School and the Seattle City Council. As a consultant, she has led many advocacy campaigns to success. She is a longtime member of Seattle’s St. James Cathedral Parish.

“FAN is setting out to build a broader set of interfaith and secular communities to build a powerful united voice taking courageous public action,” said Paul Benz, FAN co-director. “We’re excited Jackie is joining us in this work. She’s a natural leader with a deep faith. She knows the politics, the issues; she knows the process and has the passion.”

Retiring co-director Alice Woldt spent almost 25 years on the executive staff at the Church Council of Greater Seattle and at Washington Association of Churches. She ushered the unification with LPPO last year and is recognized as a longtime effective and dedicated community leader for peace and justice. “I’m thrilled about FAN’s next new phase of building a solid base in the interfaith community statewide,” said Woldt.

Save the Date for Interfaith Advocacy Day 2013!

President’s Day, February 18, 2013, Olympia, WA

A Brief Report from Interfaith Advocacy Day 2012

“Uniting Hearts and Minds: Raising Revenue for the Common Good”

Over 250 people representing all three Abrahamic faiths attended the 2012 Interfaith Advocacy Day on February 14.

Workshops and speakers throughout the day educated attendees regarding strategies to alleviate homelessness and poverty, preserve the public safety net, ensure adequate health care for all, promote toxic-free kids and other environmental legislation, and boost revenue options in the budget process.

Attendees met with their senators and representatives and their staffs throughout the day to lobby for such revenue options in order to preserve programs that aid our most vulnerable citizens and the environment. Some advocates also brought offerings of letters for legislators from their home communities. In addition, FAN coordinated a morning meeting between religious leaders and the governor.

A few statistics for those keeping track:

250+ people attended.

They represented 78 congregations/faith communities.

They were from 35 of the 49 legislative districts in WA state.

All three Abrahamic traditions were present and participatory — Jewish, Christian, and Muslim.

Of the Christians, 11 denominations were represented, including ELCA Lutheran, United Methodist, Episcopalian, United Church of Christ, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Community Christian, Free Methodist, Disciples of Christ, and Christian Reformed

At least 6 community agencies and 1 theological education institution participated.

38 clergy participated.

18 Advocating Congregations participated, sending 76 people among them.

Your donation to FAN on May 2nd will be S-T-R-E-T-C-H-E-D by the Seattle Foundation when you give through the link here!

GiveBIG is a community-wide day of giving hosted by The Seattle Foundation and it will increase the size of your donation to us. A share of every contribution made through The Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG program on the day of May 2nd will be matched by a pool of funds that the Foundation and corporate sponsors have set aside.

GiveBIG will increase your impact in several ways:

Grow your gift! A share of every contribution made to FAN through The Seattle Foundation’s online Giving Center between midnight and midnight on Wednesday, May 2, will be matched by The Seattle Foundation and GiveBIG’s corporate sponsors, who have put $500,000 into the “stretch pool.”

Win a Golden Ticket! During the day, you could be chosen at random to have your charity of choice—FAITH ACTION NETWORK—receive an additional $1,000 from GiveBIG’s sponsors. This year, the selected donor will also be eligible to win a Starbucks gift card worth $100!

We encourage you to join all our supporters to give big on May 2. Your gift will help increase and sustain our interfaith work for the common good. This is a critical time for the growth of FAN: we’ve just hired Jackie O’Ryan as our new co-director, and we’re accepting resumes for a new faith community organizer. We’re poised to increase our efforts and effectiveness around the state as we work for social and economic justice, and your gift will help!

Mark your calendar! Donate to Faith Action Network between midnight and midnight on Wednesday, May 2, through our page in The Seattle Foundation’s Giving Center.
