What’s up with the Equal Pay bill? –The House passed HB 1506 with a vote of 69 to 28. The Senate Labor and Commerce Committee has passed both 1506 and SB 5140, and both are eligible for floor action in the Senate. The hold up? Corporate lobbyists continue to insist on multiple amendments, including preemption. Preemption is a favorite corporate ploy to have state legislatures permanently prohibit action by local governments on everything from environmental regulations to commonsense standards like paid sick days. These Equal Pay bills are clear steps forward, but will not eliminate the gender and racial wage gaps. To prohibit us – and our daughters and granddaughters – from advocating for equal rights in our own communities is simply not acceptable. (Because 1506 has already passed House of origin, it remains alive after this Wednesday’s cut off.)

Rally agenda – With women earning cents on the dollar, and moms earning even less, the skyrocketing costs of early learning and childcare leave families strapped and struggling to get ahead. But we can invest in stronger outcomes for moms and children this legislative session by expanding access to high-quality early learning programs like ECEAP and bringing our state’s equal pay laws into the 21st century. Join us to rally with our elected champions in support of these critical issues.
