Make Your Voice Heard: The Second Annual MLK Day Youth Advocacy Workshop

Are you concerned about the dramatic increase in hatred and discrimination in the US? Are you interested in learning more about Islamophobia and Antisemitism? Do you want to use the power of your voice to say that bigotry and discrimination have no place in our communities? Do you want to meet other youth from all over the Puget Sound region who are inspired to work for change in their communities and nation? If so, join the second annual Youth Advocacy Workshop!

Who: The event is open to all youth in 6th-12th grade and is organized by Kids4Peace. Program partners include the Council on American-Islamic Relations, 21 Progress, Youth Speaks, and Northwest Film Forum.

When: Sunday, January 14, 2018, 2-6pm (the day before MLK Day)

Where: Seattle University Student Center, Room 160. (1100 East James Way, Seattle)

Program Details: This four-hour workshop will empower youth with the tools to speak out publicly against Islamophobia and Antisemitism, while also building relationships between diverse communities:

  • Hour 1. Introductions; sharing of concerns about the current climate in the US; background on
    Islamophobia and Antisemitism in the US; the importance of speaking up and telling our stories
  • Hours 2 & 3. Breakout sessions designed to equip youth with specific tools for speaking out: Film,
    Spoken Word, News Media, Harnessing People Power, Bystander Intervention
  • Hour 4. Sharing about breakout session experiences; committing to taking action in our community

Note that while this event will focus on Islamophobia and Antisemitism, the skills learned can be used to
advocate for any issue of concern.
