Find Your Lane Activism Career Fair

March 15 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

On Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 7 pm, over a dozen activist and humanitarian organizations will gather for Find Your Lane, an activist engagement fair. This free volunteerism “career fair”-style event is intended to answer the question: “I need to stand up against Trump and the alt-right, but how?”

Thousands of compassionate people, previously uninvolved in activism, have been struggling to find a way to fight back. But outside of donating to well-known causes and participating in marches, most people don’t know what direct action they can take.

Find Your Lane – Seattle provides an answer. Over a dozen locally based or chaptered activist and humanitarian organizations will be represented at this event, designed to give prospective activists, participants and volunteers an opportunity to learn about organizations operating in the region, speak with members of the groups to get key questions answered, and to make personal contact for ongoing involvement.

In addition to the tradeshow / career-fair section of the event, Find Your Lane will also feature an open mic / open forum “Crazy Ideas” component, to allow people with an idea but no organization to recruit collaborators. Early response from registered attendees suggest this will be a popular section, featuring ideas such as new media outlets targeting “across the gap” voters, surveys for politicians with built-in constituent verification and creating an infrastructure to offer unused Airbnb inventory to the homeless.

Organizations confirmed thus far include World Relief (refugee resettlement), Gender Justice League (trans-rights), The Sierra Club (environmental issues), 350 Seattle (DAPL) and Communities Rising (organizational assistance). See hive-mind.com/findyourlane/fyl-organizations/ for an up-to-date list. Only groups that are actively seeking participants, members or volunteers will be present, but the range of topics and efforts they work on will be broad.

The Metropolist (2931 1st Ave S., Seattle) has graciously donated the use of their premiere meeting space for the event, and, after attendees have finished browsing the floor, they are encouraged to network and engage in “face-to-face social media”. Local DJ Marc vH will provide the atmosphere, and food and drinks will be available to create an atmosphere conducive to plotting the resistance with like-minded rebels.

Both newly activated citizens and the organizations that hope to enroll them are enthusiastic about the event. “I’ve felt so frustrated and helpless with everything that’s happened since Trump was elected,” said Cam Manny. “I want to do something more than just post on Facebook, but I don’t know what. This event is exactly what I need to get activated.”

Nicole Bradford of participating organization 350Seattle added “This event meets a critical need for us: connecting personally with the people who share our goals, but may not know what the next move is.”
