Community Information Forum on Hate Crimes

May 10 @ 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Hate Crimes 5-10Background

As we all know, hate incidents are on the rise in our communities, and often go unreported, and if they are unreported, it is difficult to know the true prevalence rate and to take action to address them with the goal of helping the victims and preventing future incidents.  The victims often suffer in silence, fearful of retaliation and without knowing what recourse they have, or prevented by language and cultural barriers to get the help they need, or afraid to report incidents due to their immigration status.  We hope that the forum will make this important information more accessible to the community, and open the conversation on how we can protect our communities.  We thank the India Association of Western Washington for sharing the template of the very successful hate crimes forum they presented on the Eastside, and Interim CDA for being lead partners in organizing the event and reaching out to several co-sponsors.  And thanks to everyone else for your role in lending your leadership to this effort!

RSVP + information on number of guests, interpreters, languages

We ask that people planning to attend RSVP by contacting Stephanie Riedl, at stephanier@acrs.org or 206 695-7582, to tell us how many people are coming, whether they will need interpreters, and if so, which language(s), by 5/8 if possible.  We are asking our co-sponsors to bring interpreters if needed for your members or clients, and to let us know in advance how many people and which languages.  We ask that interpreters arrive by 5:30pm to be trained on the interpreter equipment we have, which I believe can accommodate 5 languages.  If we have more than 5 languages, interpreters may need to interpret without the headphones.

Location, transportation and parking

We encourage use of public transportation (Mt. Baker light rail stop, Route 106 Metro bus) or carpools as there is limited parking on site.  ACRS is located at 3639 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South, Seattle, a big blue and orange block long building between Charlestown to the south and Walden to the North on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South.  Parking lots are on the south end of the building, and there is likely to be limited street parking.  The event will be held in the building’s first level in the gym, so please go down the garden path beside MLK Jr. Way South to our East entrance, framed by red, at the bottom of the garden path.  That entrance will remain open during the event and leads to the gym.  The south main entrance, just off the parking lot, is closed after 6pm.
